There is a hole in the thing at the back of the trans that the torque tube attaches to. What is it for and is it positioned correctly?

Are there threads in that hole? The part on my Ford is turned 180 degrees and has a right angle grease fitting screwed into it - fitting points to the rear.

That’s the inner cone, so no threads in it. The hole just lets the grease migrate through a bit. The outer clamshell has the grease fitting in it. Your pic is missing the outer clamshell.

Here is an illustration and Part name and numbers for reference.Hope this helps.Suggest you move that cone or cap ( part 4513)so it points down and mount the 2 piece clam shell (part 4520) accordingly so the grease zerk lines up with that hole.

Doesn’t make any difference if the inner cone’s hole lines up with the outer clamshell, because there is a torquetube in between them with no holes.

Here's a few photos that may clarify. You can see the clamshell grease fitting on the bottom clamshell in the 4th photo. Don't forget to install the two special square headed nuts at the bottom of the clamshell. The 2 nuts on the motor mount bolts are the acorn lock nuts on the steering arms.
