Default Paint colors

I'm working on an A roadster with a V8 and all traditional components- trans, hydraulics, K member, etc. I have it running and I'm planning on painting it next summer. Back in the day, were all of the dry lakes cars black? It sure looks like it in the old black and white photos. Is it possible that many cars retained their original Ford factory paint schemes? Thanks in advance for any comments you might have.

Back in the '50s, a high percentage of Rods in California were in grey primer.
