Default F100 Steering Box

I would like to hear from people who are running a F100 Steering Box.

Have you had any problems with your F100 box?
How long have you had it?
Would you go back to original?
How much play do you have in the Steering wheel?

Thanks
Ron

I don't have one but I have only heard good things about them, particularly the ones from Randy Gross. I drove a friend's car that has one and there was effectively no play at all. It's not original equipment so it ain't for show cars, but I imagine most people like theirs.

Just finished installing one in my "30 town sedan.
LOVE it. Easy to install and works GREAT.
No play in steering at ALL.
Light switch and horn rod all work fine with it.
NO I would not go back to original.

I got mine from Randy Gross. Great guy to deal with and quick to answer any questions I had prior to and after buying.

The F100 Steering box sound impressive with 1/16'' to zero play. I feel for show cars original is the way to go but with 3.5'' to 4'' of play on my seven tooth (After adjustment) is a safety issue. I have only had my car for month and have put on about 150 miles however I am yet to go over 35 to 40 due to the steering wheel play. My 29 has a new front end and was restored by the prior owner. I have sorted out a few things but the steering has been the only major concern......I need to do something to make it enjoyable and safe.

I like modern or newer upgrades as long as they don't show.
I used the whole F100 box and column including the self cancelling turn signals.
I also have a power assist cylinder from a older Nash hooked to the pitman arm.
It is out of sight behind the splash apron.

The unit from Randy Gross is ready to bolt in. It replaces the original perfectly except that is head over heels better. If you have an old F100 unit you can ship it to him for modification and rebuilding. Randy 714 292 8660

If someone made a kit like this, I'd buy one in a "New York Minute"

A late 50's Ford or Merc cylinder can be used also. Research might turn up more.

This all sounds nice. There's not too many F1/F100 steering boxes on eBay but a rebuild for a 2 tooth box (the one I have) is near $1000, so I am tempted

I have one and it is really nice. The sector is really a rotor so there is no sliding contact. Roller on roller. I had to rebuild mine. It was not all that hard to do but you need to so some fitting and welding. There is only one adjustment that tightens up everything and it is really simple to use. I run 85W-140 G5 in mine. Ford used friction welding to assemble them. I had to grind off the weld to take it apart and then used a wire welder instead of friction welding to put it back together.

I've installed F-100 boxes from Randy Gross in two of my A's. No issues

I have an F-100 box from Randy and I love it. No way I would go back to the stock box. I would say that at least half the cars in our club have the F-100 box and everybody is very happy with them.

I was able to be present when Randy Gross puts these units together, he is stubborn and uncompromising when he builds these. He will only do it with the best components and uses machinist and welders that have great skill to modify these for Model A use. He personally assembles and tests them and he is very proud of the finish and the results of the modification. This is not a do it yourself project should you decide to try it on your own. There is a lot of work to convert a stock box. A week or so ago there was a Paul Shinn video and he also highly complement Randy for his builds of these steering boxes as well as his brake drum / system refurbishment that he offers.

My car came with one. No play easy to steer.
+1 on Randy Gross - His shafts are 1 piece some others weld to shafts together and that can cause obvious problems.
