Can you imagine driving that thing in the winter with no doors.

Don't have to imagine: high school in Big Bear Lake,Ca. 1963 I drove my fordor in winter w/o top or anything behind the front seat except fenders. Couldn't afford antifreeze so drained the radiator every night & poured in water from the hot water heater every morning. Also, had to sweep the snow off the seat after a storm. OK then but now the body wouldn't stand for it.

Or what about folks who drove open Model T's, Model A's and V8's? Like the touring cars and the phaetons. Sure they had side curtains but that wasn't a lot of protection.

Roadsters, too! The NYC Police Department bought 50 Roadsters. The low temperature in NYC today is 19 Fahrenheit (-7.7 Celsius).

Back in the day,

We were all younger than.

I remember going from a 1931 Model A to a 1948 Plymouth Deluxe Coupe. I felt like I had died and gone to heaven.

In the photo of the snow mobile mail truck, you can see the hardware at the top for the sliding door. The door was taken off because the rear tractor treads and rear fender would interfere with it. The rounded panel that was at the bottom rear of the door opening was also taken off. This panel closed up the curved opening in the bottom rear corner of the door that accommodated the rear fender on the wheeled version. See https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346613

Admiral Byrd must have had fun with the "Snowbirds."

There is a fair number of pix online of his later "Snow Cruiser" which as near as I can tell was used on "subsequent" trips to the South Pole. Not so many of the "Snowbirds" which are described in his book.

Google AI to the "partial rescue."

Quote:
Admiral Richard E. Byrd used a 1929 Ford Model A Snow Bird vehicle during his 1931 Antarctic expedition. The Snow Bird was a specially adapted vehicle with caterpillar tracks and skis to help Byrd travel through snow.
Accompanying the AI description is a "generic" picture of the Arps SnowBird - NOT of Admiral Byrd's particular unit "in situ."

I think it's in Byrd's book.

The annual NH "Vintage Snowmobile" meet was held February 15th. Primarily a Model T exercise, Model A Snowbirds are welcomed.
