I'm mainly a "51 guy", but I seem to remember the '49's and '50's had the codes stamped directly on the sheet metal of the cowl, '51's had data plates.

Quite possibly. I got my Vin tag from him 13 years ago. It has been awhile, but I have sent other to him in the last few years.

For clarification purposes, my original 1949 Ford Custom Fordor, assembled at the Twin Cities Ford Assembly plant, has a data plate, with vehicle identification number mounted behind the passenger side hood hinge on the cowl. Need either direct sunlight or a flashlight to see and read it.
It also has vehicle code stampings on the center of the cowl.
