I have heard comments here on the Ford Barn to not bolt up flatheads to the bell housings but use a side mount that bolts up to the exhaust manifold, I have looked online to speedway and I have heard the name Stumpyes but find no listing there also.
I wonder does any one know of a current supplier. Don |

If you have access to a welder, search the forum as there have been numerous discussions on how to make one out of angle iron.

I've been using Stumpy's side mount adapter as well as some of his engine carts for years.

Here’s one I made quite a few years ago. It’s not the prettiest and the plate the bolts pass through could be a bit wider so the holes would be not so close to the edge but it was materials I had on hand at the time. Works great and withstood me beating pistons out of the old block after all other attempts failed.

It’s quite simple to fab one up if you have a welder/grinder. I used some 1/4” plate I had lying around to mount to the block, and a piece of round pipe left over from a column support fit perfectly into the engine stand. I will say, that the 1/4” plate did bend slightly when I got a second flathead about a month ago and started disassembling it. The supports in the pic in the post above is a good idea, or go to even a thicker metal plate.

I also bought this engine stand from Stumpys to keep a spare flathead on, he makes quality stuff.

I searched "flathead v8 engine stand/adaptor" for the pictures of the home made ones.

I made my flathead side-mount adapter and storage stand from 3/8 plate and leftover square tube. After cutting three flange plates I had enough left over from the 3/8 plate to bend a c-shaped adapter to fit each of my three engine stands - allowing six bolt attachment to the engine.

I first looked at side mounting my flathead going so far as to fabricate the plate from 3/4 “ flat bar the heavier material was so I could center bolt it to the axle to allow it to be interchanged side to side. I decided in the end it restricted access to one side of the block and went to rear mount. My project when finished will not have a transmission attached so I punched out the lower dowell pins ( just happenen to be tapping size for M12 x 1.75 metric thread so I ended up with 6 bolts available at rear of the block for the engine stand
I would be a bit wary of rotating the side mount single handled , when they take off they take off, at least on a rear mount you can stick a sleeved pipe in the bore to help rotate it ( least before heads go on ) Whats that you say? Wimp , afraid so , least after 70 years still got all my fingers. At least my side mount plate was not wasted , used to keep headers in alignment when welding. A couple of photo`s enclosed , my first stand fabricated in the sixties I often wonder about the welding back then but it has had a few Y block and FE series engines on it. The second shows the current set up , the heavy duty stand is built into the workshop mobile crane with a worm and roller gear set from an early Jeep winch , depends where and how you sling your engine you can use the crane to mount the engine to the stand. ` I am a bit dubious as to the load ratings they give some of this el cheepo , ` some assembly required ` engine stands they sell at Auto parts stores. Sorry if I hijacked the original thread with this post, it strays a bit. |
