Not sure if it was lack pf knowledge or lack of care, but this is the worst 312 engine build ever. Back story bought engine for $800 and was told it was abgood engine that just had head work done.
Started it and it was spewing out oil fron the exhaust. Tear the heads off and find the block is overbored .030. A single standard piston was installed in the block, the oil control rings on 5 of the pistons were installed improperly, the rod journals require .010 undersized bearings and didn't have them, and the wrong rings were installed and had a gap of .112......... Savin this "312" that's actually a 314 now. Pics to come soon. |

Ouch. But don’t feel alone. I bought one with a fresh rebuild, ran nice, clean inside. Owner had a more modern engine going in. Since it was going to be a an F code clone, I tore it down. Looked good. Crankshaft didn’t pass mag check, hairline crack that hadn’t broken yet. And all I really wanted was the crank, it was only 10/10 under. Wouldn’t have lasted long at 7lbs and 5500 rpm. Block did check out, I managed to use it.

I don't know how long ago you paid $800 for the engine, but imagine paying thousands for an engine and having the same result. Unless I know whom I'm dealing with, or can hear an engine running, I would not risk it. If an engine is disassembled, you have a better idea of what you're buying, especially if you know what to look for.

I just got an engine from a yard with a rebuild tag very recent and the topping looked super clean and I'll check it out before running it. |
