Helping a widow lady with some of her cars, she has a 28 coupe with the early pan/cleanout. Car hasn't run in 15+ years, oil was thick/stinky. What am in for if, I remove the cleanout bolts? Will the pump just drop down? Any issues with putting it back? Never seen one of these. Thanks

If you remove the cleanout cover, there is a chance the oil pump will fall out unless you use one of these: https://www.snydersantiqueauto.com/p...8837&cat=41694
If you find the bottom of the pan is loaded with gunk, I would advise you to also remove the valve cover and clean out that area, flush, refill and drive on.

If it is a sticky mess, pull the oil fill tube and see what the dip tray looks like. Pulling the pan is not fun but easier than pulling the motor for a rebuild.

The pump has a screen around it and the best thing about the clean out feature on the ‘28 is you can pull the pump and screen without dropping the entire pan. No it’s not hard at all to put the pump back, but like the others suggested, if it’s gummy then pulling the pan is a good general idea. You’ll certainly want to pull the dipper tray as well when you get that far. In my case the dipper tray was clear and all the wax buildup was under the tray.

Thanks for the advice, I did pull pan/dipper tray/oil pump, full of sludge. I cleaned valve chamber, wasn't that bad. Got it all back together, dumped 2 quarts down dist hole, rest down the tube. Engine started right up, after a few minutes it went to knocking badly, probably why it was parked, I gave it my best effort though.

I bet it just needs the babbit rods taken up a bit.

Lesson learned - check the bearings whenever the pan is off.......

Make sure that the tray in the oil pan is all the way in place , if not it can make a very serious knocking noise .
