1928 Model A Carb and timing.
I was going to rebuild the carb on my car today and found it does not match the gaskets I ordered. Could this be a Model B carb? The old owner said this car always ran better than the roadster he had with a Zenith Model A carb. I do not remember ever working on this carb when he owned it. I found a receipt from his dad for the purchase of a Grose Jet for a Model B carb in 1985.
I also was trying to set the timing after rebuilding the distributor today. I cranked the engine over with the hand crank to find the timing mark on the cam gear. I could not feel the dimple with the timing pin. I used a small screw driver and thought I found it but could not be sure. I have a Lizard cam bore scope and finally found the dimple. It was very shallow and almost not there. I remember years ago that it was hard to find. I lined it up with the timing pin hole as close to center as I could. I set the points and timing. I kept thinking this would be a continual problem and I needed to fix it somehow. I used a drill that just fit into the timing pin hole and drilled out just enough to be able to feel the dimple with the timing pin. The pin does move in when I crank the engine by hand and it gets to the dimple. Is this a safe fix for this problem? I cannot feel any play between the gears. I am fairly sure I replaced the cam gear less than 2000 miles ago. It is a fiber laminated gear.
I am making progress on the car but not getting as much done as I would like.
Thanks
