I just picked up a really nice crack free 30-31 steering wheel that's going to replace my 2-year-old Snyder's steering wheel that has developed many major cracks. The new SW has a few minor scratches that I'm going to polish out and its finish is a very smooth gloss black. Is that the correct OEM finish for a stock 30-31 steering wheel??

It would have been more of a flatter black because of the material it was made of.

I like to wet sand them up to about 1500 grit, and then hand polish with fine compound. They end up smooth as a baby's bottom and shiny, but not quite glossy black

Dupont No. 7 (Auto Body rubbing compound) worked for me after the 600 grit paper.

Do what CAS3 suggests and coat with a good quality rattle can clear coat satin or black satin.
A gloss finish was not original and shows every little scratch.

I am at a loss as to why a steering wheel would crack in such a short time. There is a ca superglue in black, starbond, that would be a great candidate for fix and repair. I have used super glue for wood metal and various plastics with great results. Wish I had an older steering wheel to practice on. I now need to check out both of my cars and see if they need repair.

Whatever you do to your steering wheel, avoid putting any paint on it. I did and it has been coming off in flakes for several years. The original steering wheel is a hard rubber compound, so it has a finish that looks like a tire.

I agree ^^^, no paint and no clear. just polish what you have like Henry did.
