Default early oil pump

I have a 37 flathead engine with a worn out oil pump.
looking to replace it with a melling pump. The pickup tube
interferes with the splash tray. Am I to assume I need to
cut out portions of the tray to fit. Early pumps are no longer
available as near as I can tell.
Thanks, Rick

Rick, yes, you will need to trim the baffle. I strongly advise you to only trim as much as necessary to provide the clearance needed.
Many have found out the hard way that by removing the baffle, the oil pressure will drop off dramatically when going up a steep incline and / or going around corners.

Good but used original pumps are readily available.

I have cut out the entire baffle in the oil pan and used the 8ba pickup tube. I have done this twice and no problems.

You've been lucky.

One other thing to look for if you buy a new pickup tube for the later pump. Original on the right and repop on the left. Notice the difference in the length of the tube . This can cause major problems.
