Default Alternate Carb

Has anyone tried one of these? https://daytonaparts.com/universal-r...arburetor.html

Might be good for experimenting with but a Zenith or Tilly seems so much easier for a stocker.

That looks to be a variation on the new Zenith universal replacement carbs for tractors. If you look on Steiner Tractor they have something similar. It certainly would be very adjustable but I’m not sure it would be worth it when you can get a quality rebuilt original carb for the roughly same money. Then there’s the issue of finding replacement parts. I would also have concerns that it would be designed more for constant rpm applications.

This might be a good idea if they sell a larger displacement carburetor than stock. As Thodge said you can get a regular carb for the same money.

The idea of a larger updraft carb would be to keep the stock look while getting the performance advantages of a larger carb. If they sell one with a greater CFM than the Model B carb it could be an option. Only other one that I found that might work was the Holley 859 used on the early Ford COE six cylinder trucks.

I have seen a few local Model A owners that use them on their cars that are driven frequently and for tours. I was told the are "forklift" carbs. Owners seemed pleased with their performance and reliability.

One advantage with the Weber downdraft is that it has two throats. The smaller one is used to start the car and for normal driving. When you really want some extra power, putting the peddle to the metal will open up the second, larger throat. The smaller throat is jetted for economy and the larger one jetted for power.

There is such a thing as too large of a carburetor. The venturi is too large to pull the fuel into the air stream. The dual throats solves that problem.
