How do I get the old spring off and the new one on the shaft with a sharp bend one end and a bracket on the other?

Unhook the long spring arm from the throttle rod and the spring will twist around thw bend.

May I ask why you want to change it? 9 times out of 10 the old part, if still serviceable is better than a new part.

I just acquired the car and the throttle doesn't always return to full idle unless you blip it or pull up on the peddle. I oiled the linkage and it seems free enough. I couldn't talk to the previous owner, but I received a box of parts with the car including a new throttle return spring.

Look from underneath, and make sure the Throttle Pedal linkage is not rubbing on floor matt or wood floorboards . You can reach up and pull it down with a flashlight to ck clearance.
