Hey All,
I was wondering how one would lift an engine WITHOUT using an intake plate? I see people using intake lift plates but then I see all these built up motors on stands all decked out. I can't imagine having to stripping an engine down to just to pick it up with the price of a gasket set being what they are. Regards Bill |

I use head bolts to attach the chain sling to. In a pinch I've also wrapped a strap around the exhaust manifolds but I've been told (and agree) that its not a good idea since manifolds are prone to breaking. That said when I pulled the 302 and with the AOD trans still attached out of an '83 van I bought for the engine and trans I used a carb lifting plate. No issues.

You can use a chain run though two intake bolts. Just use longer bolts and use one in front and one in back. I do remove carb so I can keep the chain shorter.

I use chains and/or a lift bar and chains. I have a short piece of chain on each end of the intake that picks up two long 3/8 NC bolts (Grade 8) - say 10" in length. With these two pieces attached at each end (4 bolts total), then I have a piece of chain between them that uses those U-connectors to connect into the ends.
Another good way is to use an engine lift bar (designed to move the weight forward or backwards) - and connect its two ends to the short pieces of chain - with like 8" pieces coming down from the bar. |
