As I was going through some of my dad's Model A stuff I found an open ended lug nut. It is the same as a regular lug nut except it does not have the "acorn" on it. Does anyone remember ones like this or why they were used? Just curious about it.

The A i bought has a lug nut like that that has a wheel stud through it and it fits in my rear spare tire carrier on the back of my coupe. Doesn't look like a stock part, but looks like something someone made up. I don't know what the original nut was for.

I remember seeing them back in the 70's but I'm not sure of the purpose behind them. Hoping someone here can enlighten me!

Looks to me like it could be used either way around. Maybe one end is for flogged out stud holes before the dished washers were available?

I was thinking somewhat the same as Synchro909, but more like maybe, if one end got buggered up, just turn it around.

I haven't thought about that. That would keep the acorn nuts from bottoming out. You may be on to something...

Looks like the lug nuts used on some race cars with long wheel studs. Closed end lugs would bottom out before they were tight.

That could be possible. I know they are the same size as a Model A and since they were in with a bunch of A parts I assumed they were associated with an A.
