Hi All,
I just finished getting my Burtz engine installed in the car and ran it for the first time. It has the Stripe oil pump and a full flow filter. With the old spring I was getting 50 psi oil pressure at 2,000 rpm in the old engine (insert bearing and pressure lube). This is more than what Terry recommends. I bought the lighter springs from McMaster Carr as recommended by Stripe. I sent several of you springs because McMaster Carr sells packages of a dozen. (I have more is anyone needs them.) The new spring did not contact the relief valve so I stretched it out, increasing the length by 1/2 inch with no load. I recommend you do this too. I am using 10W-30 oil as an engine wash in case there was any crap built into the engine. I will drain it out and replace it with the heaver oil that Terry recommends in about 50 miles. At 2,000 rpm I am getting 25 psi and at idle I am getting 12 psi. By the way, the Burtz engine is a sweet running engine. I am very happy with it.

Have you tried running the engine at 2800 to 3000 rpm? If so, what was the oil pressure?
Thanks for posting your findings. Good Day! After comment: I found that the Stipe pump would produce pressures much higher than that when using 10W-30 and run near 2,800 rpm. So much so that I had concern for the longevity of the oil pump drive gear and mating cam gear. My observation was the Stipe did not have enough pressure relief capacity. I added an additional relief. Last edited by Dave in MN; 04-09-2022 at 06:49 AM. |

I am vey happy with my engine too. Smooth running and strong - just what I need. As for oil pressure, I made a relief valve to blow off at 25 psi. The engine holds 20psi till it gets quite hot, then sits on 17-18 with no more than 3 psi hot at idle. The modified A oil pump I am using is barely adequate So I'm putting a modified V8 pump in when I get it. Fortunately, I found one in Canada so I can get it here. I couldn't do that if it were from the US. I expect it will hold 25psi at cruising speed (50+ mph in O/D) and a few pounds at idle - much better.
I'm sure this engine will do what I want it to do for a long time.

Hi Dave,
I just ran it long enough to get it warm and will re torque the head this morning. It is not broken in so I am restricting my rpm for a while. I have to finish putting the floorboards in and tidying up things before taking it for a drive. I want to break it in gently.

Exciting to hear you are up and running. You are going to be impressed with this engine. I understand about the break-in. Good plan! When you do rev it up some, please report back. BTW: I am on a road trip with mine. Just drove from MN to FLorida. I have over 9,000 miles on mine now. Flawless. Thanks. |
