Hi guys ,a quick question. has any one used the harbor fright tire changer on the 19 in. wheels. I have 6 tires to change out ,dismount and remount and the reviews are pretty good, could be worth it. I know they are supposed to be easy enough but at my age now any helpful tool is welcomed. thanks THE HOOCH

If you do not buy the tire changer you can drive over the tires with another car to break them loose. Put carpet down to protect the paint. Or a big clamp will work.

Growing up in the country we often used another car to break the tire from the rim. We also used an old style bumper jack, placing the tire under the jack stand. Then used 2 old leaf springs to remove the tire. We used a rope wrapped around the tire with a stick as a tourniquet to get the tire to seal with a small compressor.
Dang I miss the good ole days.... but my back doesn't. |

I have the HF tire changer, but have not used it on a 19" model A wheel yet. I have used it on my Willy's jeep tires. It works well. I beefed up the bead breaker, as it is a little flimsy. It needs to be firmly mounted. Some guys bolt it to their garage floor or on a pallet. I made a receiver hitch for my truck. It works really well.

You need to have your own tire irons.

HF sells nice big tire irons reasonable. I have a pair and after doing 2 wheels, I take a break for another day.

I use the old HF orange tire bead breaker. Works easily. Then I use two tire irons and take tire off from the BACKSIDE with that nice shinny hubcap undisturbed and resting on a nice rug/blanket.

I have used it many times on 19 and 21 inch rims. It works fine for breaking the bead, but if you use the long bar to remove the tire, it will severely scratch the paint. I use the small original tire irons to remove or put on the tire. A tire lubricant such as RU Glide helps a lot.

I couldn't count the number of tyres I have changed with none of that gear. I break the tyre off the rim by stomping on it, then a pair of levers and it is off. To fit a tyre, all I need is a rubber mallet. These tyres are very soft, even cold. Warm, you barely need any tools.

My wooden copy:
The tire cover was left on for this posed pic. Remove for actual tire changing! |
