Default Model t engine question

I bought this weekend a motor and transmission on a half frame with front axle and belt pully on transmission. I believe was used for a saw mill or some other belt driven tool my question is when i pulled the head off number one and number two cylinder had no rod or piston, i know they did that on the air compressors but did they do that on other equipment power plants
