I searched the forum but still have questions.
As the title suggests I need to upgrade my original 1930 Tudor plate glass while I have the interior out. Have read some great threads on how to (thanks GeneBob). I have searched but still have questions for a glass supplier. 1. is there a difference in glass (size) from 28/29 vs 30/31? 2. From Fordbarn research I prefer Tempered glass (except windshield) but cannot find a local source, nor classic car internet glass vendors ( asked Vintage glass and Bobs classic auto glass who only carry laminate for the A) vendor suggestions that can provide such are welcomed. I have emailed a few Model A specific vendors and await replies. Thanks in advance Scott |

I always used laminate all around,it actually was cheaper. Then a friend that's a glass guy,and a car guy, told me he had hooked up with an outfit that was affordable. He cut a set of plate for my Tudor, and sent them out.He called a couple days later with bad news.He was pretty mad, final bill from them was triple the quoted price. He wanted to let them keep the glass, and eat the cost of the materials himself.I told him I would pay as he had acted in good faith. He refused, and told them to keep the glass. They called him a week later and dropped it to the original price, and for him pick them up and not to come back. They actually tried to bill him $600.for tempering the side windows in a Tudor.4 pieces.

I got my glass from Bert's Model A in Denver but I live close enough to go and pick it up. They have complete sets with/without tint and will ship. I think there is a charge for crating glass. I think their online catalog states what the charges are.
They are good people and may be able to point you to another source if they cannot provide what you need. |

I ordered tempered glass for the quarter windows and back glass from Bert’s for my ‘29 Tudor. They were shipped for a reasonable price. They were a perfect fit.

I worked in the photovoltaic industry for many years and one of my tasks was specifying tempered glass for the panels. Tempered glass is made by heating regular plate glass to a certain temperature and then quenching (rapidly cooling) it. That puts the surface in compression and the core (center) in tension. That makes the glass much stronger and makes it break into little squares. However it also makes the edge very easy to damage. If you drop glass on its edge or even set it down hard on concrete it will shatter into the small squares. Usually automotive glass is laminated. The tempering process can be expensive. The sliding glass doors in houses are tempered but that is done in high volume on an assembly line in a factory.

I took my existing glass to a glass shop. They used that to make new glass. The result was a perfect fit. They could either do laminate or tempered. I went with the laminate. Much less than $600 and no shipping.

I didn't know Berts was selling tempered side glass.I thought all the glass being sold mail order was laminate.I really have no problem using laminated all around,I always have. When my friend told me he had found an outfit to temper glass at a reasonable price figured I would go that way,it is the way all cars are done now. When they quoted $180.to temper his glass, then gave him a bill for nearly $600.he went off the deep end.He was charging me $10.50 per square foot for laminated back then. While I haven't had one done in about 5 years,if I took him an A windshield frame cleaned and treated,he would give it back to me with new glass for a $100.dollar bill.If I wanted it bedded in the correct original stuff he charged his selling price for the glass and XX per hour shop rate until it was done.
