Default Carb kit for H six

Who sells a good carb kit with ethanol fuel resistence for my 1951 H six? I tend to like a regular tapered needle/seat arrangement. Yesterday my float began sticking and a tap with a tapper cures it. But not til gas is spilling out over the hot manifolds.

In my experience, no one. I fooled around with several kits from Mike's carb, Carpenter, and a couple of others. None had the correct pieces. Finally, I sent the carb off to cowboyjohnsautoparts.com and it was the smartest thing I've done - second only to using Charlie NY for a different carb rebuild. Charlie doesn't have a setup to test 226 H units (I asked).

It is possible that Daytona has a good kit but I wasn't up for another feeble attempt.

You have heard of Cowboy John on FTE, no doubt, highly spoken of. Anywho and how, I think, he has good kits for these. Worth Googling him.

I've always heard good things about Daytona for carb kits but knowing and hearing are 2 different things. Still might be worth a phone call.

Thanks all! I will chase it down from this info. Is there something I could try in the meantime to remedy the sticking til I get my kit?

If needle is original metal, could try lightly lapping g it into seat. Or at least tapping it lightly with ball pien hammer. Believe these ideas came from Mr. Bruce Lancaster.

Thanks for the tips. I should check out the float, needle and seat while the truck is still without it's front sheet metal. It's as fun to work on as a tractor. You take a tall truck like these tonners, then add the big wide jailbar fenders, engine sitting low in the frame and a little old man at 5'6" and I'm standing on a milk crate to adjust the idle. Sheesh, why don't I just have a nice little roadster?

Yes, that would be a stretch over those tall fenders. Lol

I really like stock metal needle and seats as used by Ford decades ago. The new viton tipped stuff seals great for a while, then wears a groove in the viton and starts leaking. I have found NOS needle and seat sets on that auction site by searching for the part number (I use a new gasket washer under the NOS seat). I don't see anything down at the prices I like to pay on there at the moment.

Daytona carb makes a good kit for the Holley 847.

All great help, along with these other questions popping up about the sixes. I pulled the top off the carb after work as it was still sunny and truck was outside. Looks clean in there. Tiny bit of silt in the bowl cleaned out easily. Needle is viton tipped. I checked it out with my best 3.0 reading glasses. No visible score or groove. It looked like float was way off so I came into house and looked up float level. Spec from a print of ford truck manual on FTE says 1.322- 1.334. It was 1/4" too low, or too high upside down. I set it right, polished the top of the needle and tab on the float, blew air through the seat and It hasn't stuck yet. It was really bad yesterday, like every time it returned to idle. The silt must have been in there when I got the engine as I am running stock bowl filter and an inline filter before that and tank is a poly 12 gal outboard motor tank with fresh fuel. This may have fixed it but I'm still gonna order that kit tomorrow.

Ordered kit this morning from Daytona. I'm thinking the Cowboy must get the kits there... Both in Florida and all. In the meantime I ran a bunch of seafoam in the oil and gas after work. Snake oil for sure, but some chemistry type analyzed it and it's a bunch of high grade oils and strong solvents blended into a somewhat exotic cocktail that old engines sitting around seem to like. I understand the 'science' behind this.

Does the new kit come with a steel needle? Just curious

I'm afraid I did not ask. I hope it isn't the style with the disc instead of a needle. I will post it up after it arrives.

Worst case scenario, if you have a plastic-tipped needle, check a core v8 carb if you have one. I used to know for sure, but am thinking the needles were the same. A quick check between the two would verify. If so, and steel needle is not scored, you could seat that in brass seat, using one of Mr. Lancaster's methods. I have had luck tapping with ball pien hammer.

I have a stash of nos needles and seats for V8s, somewhere. Still haven't unpacked/organized all my junk in new shop. Have a half dozen or so for the 1904 Holleys, but that won't help you.

I would love to have another one of these carbs to rebuild or for a backup or parts. I have many 94s which I use on the V8s. I also have some 97s which are supposed to be the good one but I'm used to the 59-94 types. Trades? PM me.
