one end looks to be not connected to anything the other end probably to the battery terminal.
I think that end was connected to a diode that was part of the hex stud connected to gen terminal

If that is a large power diode next to it then is likely broke off the diode. You might consider replacing that rather than messing with getting a new power diode and soldering it in. Some of those items are better than others.

It looks like part of the diode is missing

This much I know:

1. The Model T cutout is NEG ground.

2. The Model A cutout is POS ground.

They both look the same ...

I have never put a Model T Diode cutout on a Model A but maybe the diode is destroyed when you do that!

Surely Benson it is only diode cutouts that are polarity sensitive ... true "electro-mechanical" cutouts ( aka points type) such as original Ts and As had will work whether the ground is pos or neg. Yes you need to match diode cutout and gimos like electronic regulators to ground polarity but not if you're running stock charging system .

John,

Very true that is why I said "Model T Diode cutout. ( I said "Diode cutout for just that reason that you mention). A mechanical cutout works no matter what the polarity is.

I was looking at photo in post #1 where only the heat sink from the diode is left over, the rest of the diode might have gone up in smoke when if it was a Model T Diode Cutout and some one installed it in a Model A which is POS ground.

Or maybe the field windings in generator limit the current?
