I am looking at two different y block air cleaners (both 57+), one is 14" and the other is 15". Besides the dia. the only difference is the size of the air intake on the side of the housing-one is smaller than the other. It will go on my 312-4 bbl., what and why the difference?
Thanks, Mike

Never mind. I found the answer. the 4bbl is tad larger and has a larger air intake than the 2 bbl.

Just a SWAG on my part, but I'm guessing the larger one is for the 312. The bigger the displacement the more air the engine wants, hence the larger air cleaner.

I think you are confusing the 1957/58 FYB with the later 1958/59 FE ACL.
See photos below with descriptions beneath them -

The guy has two one like each of those pictured. Although I can’t see the snorkel of the red one. But the blue one looks like one of them. Will either work? Mike

Shown below is the air inlet on the 1957 style and the later style ACL shown on a 1959 EDSEL 292 FYB. So they will fit either application.

Ok K, according to your pics I should go with the red one to be period/engine correct.

For the car (1957 FORD V8) to be correct in appearance, the B7A 9600-C (smaller) should be chosen.
Those later air cleaners (1958/ ) were painted different colors between car lines.

Well, I have the red one coming my way to sit atop my new 312! I just verified the little aspirin on the crank flange.

292, and I have the silver one. Actually I have it in a tub atop the carb and intake I changed my car over to a tri-power.
