Nope, the shift boot slid over the shifter down over the housing, IF you noticed it is "flanged" so after it is installed the floor mat slides over that and "sort" of seals it down. AT least that is how my 39 Mercury is!!!!!!

About the only "later" (1939-Last Automobile floor shifter) you're gonna find is in pick-ups and bigger trucks. DD

I have this funky plate that is the same shape as the cutout in my '39 pickup transmission cover. Don't know if it was used for a floor shift boot or not. Anybody seen another or really knows its use?

Gary, The 60HP used a piece that was similar to this. It didn't work with the boot at all.

That's why I didn't put it or a boot on, seemed like a lot of work with little reward.

That silver dash looks kind'a nice. I'd ditch the red and paint the shifter base a dull black. DD

Original poster it turns out has a '39 trans in a Model A with carpeting. So, "correct" is not a consideration.

Only the deluxe models in '39 had a boot. None of the trucks did.
