Any one using a rectangle side view mirror? I think they are about 2.5 x 5 in.
If so how is it working for you, how did you mount it and where did you get it. These stock round mirrors just don't give me the view I need for backing. Also been thinking of 5 in round but can't imagine a one inch difference would help much. Middle hinge placement....?? |

I use 5" round mirrors and I was surprised the difference it made. I use the 5" United Pacific S/S heads that fit the hinge mirrors.

Al, I'm glad you brought this up. This is a 4" mirror I got from the vendors a couple years ago. It's just barely better than nothing. Now you got me looking for something bigger. Convex maybe? What mirror will attach to the windshield stanchion post?

Mike I did a Barn Searce and found this picture of a "V8 Style" side view mirror.... looks like it could be better with a 5 or 6 inch head on it, perhaps a convex on the passenger side. My thought with a rectangle mirror was to have it long side up and down, making it better to see the rear fender/tire whwn backing along with traffic to the rear.

This is my simple fix for making the repop mirrors found in all the suppliers catalogs more user friendly. I especially had a hard time with the passenger side mirror. It needed to be a little lower and farther out than the repop arm.
These extensions I made allow it to swing down if needed. They move the mirrors out an inch and a half. They could be as long as you like. |

my first Model A, bought in 1986, had a rectangular side view mirror.
it worked just fine. sold the car in 1990, have not seen another mirror like it since.....

FYI, a 5" mirror has more surface area than a 2.5" x 5" mirror. Don't know if that helps but I thought I would throw that in the mix, just to confuse things.

This is before and after. Like I said earlier, the little 4" repop mirror was pretty useless, but it just never occurred to me before today that I could replace it with something better until all you guys started talking about mirrors. The photo to the right is a 7 1/2" convex mirror that was salvaged from a junk combine. With the offset mounting, it just clears the door when opened. Visibility is greatly enhanced, so I can see traffic and see to back up.
So thanks to Al and the rest of you guys for all the good ideas. mike |

Thanks Chris, I have seen some 50's Chevy mirrors that are rectangle but as described by "Ruth" the 5 inch round has more viewing area. Still looking.....?

Thanks Ruth, that's a very good point, perhaps a 6 inch head with convex on the passenger side...??? I need to see some different size heads so this ole head can make up it's mind!

Thought I would post a follow up on my mirrors, I took Blockhead and Ruths advice and went with the 5" round mirrors. As Ruth pointed out there is more surface area with the 5' head and yes, it makes a big difference. I am also going to try the mod that Bob/Al did with the 1 1/2' extension arms. Pictures show the size difference. Thanks to all for your input. Oh, almost forgot, I did a tour with Mike Peters and got to see his mirrors..... you can almost get a 180 deg. view! Very nice Mike, no one will be hiding in your blind spot.
