One of the members in the club tonight called me and asked about a problem he had this evening with his car. He backed it out of the garage to let it run for a few minutes. After about 5 minutes he lifted the hood and noticed that the bottom of the exhaust manifold and first few inches of the tail pipe were cherry red. The things that came to mind to me were timing and running too lean. Maybe a sticking exhaust valve that is not closing completely. Any ideas on what may be causing this? He had not had the problem previous to this that he had noticed. He stated that the motor was sounding good and running well. Thanks in advance for any help. Sonny

Probably "Global Warming" rearing it's ugly head!
![]() It sounds like the timing wasn't advanced enough. |

Most likely the timing is retarded. Has he ever looked under the hood after dark before? Has he set the timing per factory procedure and specs? Does he like to drive around with the spark lever up? This will make the enigie sound smooth, but if you're in tune with a Madel A, it will also sound like it's laboring hard while just idling.

Yea sounds like timing or carb is running lean.

I had an exhaust pipe glow bright orange on an engine years ago.
Was on a 1986 Honda ATX-200 3 wheeler. Was caused by a leaky exhaust valve ![]() |
