Hi All- if anyone needs an oversize or undersize cam gear to fit an engine with an incorrect cam to crank centerdistance, I'm in the middle of making a batch of aluminum cam gears and can cut a special for you without having to charge a setup fee. Send me an e-mail at [email protected] if you nave a need. I normally stock a variety of sizes, but sometimes an engine needs a special, so nows the chance. Thanks all. Dan

Dan, how are you suggesting for a home hobbyist to measure what size they would need?

Maybe Dan can do a program somewhat like the loan-a-tool deal some parts stores have. The home hobbyist orders and pays for 3 or 4 gears of various sizes. If one fits, he keeps it and returns the others. If none fit, he returns the gears (undamaged) for a full refund (or pays a small fee) and orders the right one. After checking 3 or 4, the right size should be evident.

I needed a .005" undersize gear a long time ago, Dan made one for me and it worked fine.
I run his gears in my race engine, never a problem, and I have 140 lbs. spring pressure and turn the engine 6,000 RPM! |

I also run some of Dans bronze gears with his name on them . Dans gears are most likely the best timing gears available . I've never had a problem of any kind with Dans gears .

That really is not the point here. I doubt you can find anyone that would diss anything that Dan makes, we all will agree that Dan's quality is top-level, ...but my question was if folks are requesting that he make a special sized gear outside of his normal spec sizes, how does a typical home hobbyist measure to know what special size gear to order? |

Setting up a dial indicator and checking backlash isnt difficult.Setting a proper baseline is,a new crank and cam gear (stock size) would tell the story, imagine anyone looking for an under or oversize one has backlashed a new set.

Lash can be measured with a feeler gauge cut down to a point so it slips between the gears. The hard part is trying to figure what you need when there is no clearance because the cam/crank indexing was off and the crank/cam gears are too close. If the cam gear will slip all the way in but have no clearance, a /002 undersized worked for me. If it is really tight, I would describe it to Dan and trust his judgment, recognizing it may take a time or two to get it right.

I corrected a block that was too tight on a full pressure insert engine by sleeving the mainline back to standard to the camline. I could have sleeved the camline back to standard also. About the same amount of work. |

Buy an aluminium one from the suppliers. If it doesn't work get one made.
One well known engine builder doesn't do metal timing gears. Do what you haveta do ... |
