Help identify Hydraulic Brake Upgrade

I have a 34 Cabriolet I’ve had for a couple years. It was all fixed up before I got it. I have 16” Kelsey hays rims and tires.

I’m a mechanical idiot, but I’m slowly learning.

It has a hydraulic brake upgrade and i would like some help identifying it. I just got my kingpins replaced and the mechanic was asking what the hubs were as they do not have a seal.

So my questions are…
Does anyone know what hydraulic brake system was used to replace my original brakes?

Should there be a seal in the hub?

How thick should my brake pads be? These are 5mm and seem fine-

Is there anything else missing here? I did remove the pin from the wheel nut. I removed that before I took the photo.

The backing plates are pre war, 1939-42. The key is that there is an adjustment at the 6 o'clock position. The post war one is shown in the photo. The drums are 1940-42.

Another topic. Be sure you are running a spacer or you will eventually crack the lug nut holes. See:

While Charlie is usually pretty sharp on this stuff, those drums are certainly late "drum inside the hub" as opposed to 1940 style with the drum over the hub from outside.

Thanks, I missed it. I looked quickly and from the angle of the photos (except the last one) I didn't see the hub on the outside. The good news is that they are interchangeable as an assembly.

The spindles look like 1934 that use a metal only "seal". The rubber lip seals in a 1940 hub will not have the needed shoulder on the spindle.

I am confused when you say you ordered the backing plates? Yours look fine. Did you mean to say "spacers"or maybe something else? Given the choice I would have my shoes relined instead of buying new ones. There were some new shoes that had holes in the wrong place a couple of years ago but I don't remember the details.

Back to Bob's question. How much is available above the rivet heads (or are they bonded linings?)?

The 1940 hub seal will work if you have a 1935 or newer spindle. 1934 spindles do not have a correct shoulder to fit in the seal.

Those shoes are riveted, I can see the tail of the rivet inside.

If anyone ever needs their shoes relined, I can highly recommend this place. I sent them my old shoes and the exact diameter of each drum. They sent me back beautiful relined (bonded) shoes that were arced perfectly to the drums.

It looks like a lot of threads showing on the spindle. That indicated 32-35 spindles. Take some pics of the spindle front and back. I would suspect you have the spacer for the seal to ride on.

A 34 spindle will have the steering arm for the drag link forged on the drivers side
