Thought I would post a picture of a display motor a friend has.
Lots of odd bits on this one including a cast aluminium German sump.

Yep set up for a boat exhaust manifolds are water cooled !

I'm personally intrigued by the water pumps. There seems to no way to drive them. I see no provision for a belt drive of any kind, and I don't think they're electric, which was my first thought. The only other thing I can even think of is that they are driven hydraulically, which is what the smaller tubes may be for. Although they appear to feed to the engine cooling system on the right side, those on the left are arranged rather haphazardly. Could they be driven by water pressure by the primary water intake pump (the "blt driven gear pump" mentioned on the card)?

Looks like they have a pulley driven off the front of the crank.

Possibly. The pulleys on the pumps would have to be enclosed. I don't see how the top of such a belt drive would work. There appear to be no openings for the belt to exit the water pump housings.

I believe this engine is just a display piece of odd flathead parts
The pumps have pulleys the blue color blends them in
That Eddie Fairbairn intake is not that old he only made a few I have a brand new unmachined one & the have no provision for generator mount hence no belt installed

OK. Now that you mention it, I can barely make out the pulley on the right pump. I think you're right about the "display piece" aspect of it. I would imagine that the smaller tube on the water pumps are to feed the exhaust manifolds.

They were made in New Zealand years ago by Berry & Chung pioneers of NZ made speed equipment

The head covers/splash guards serve the same purpose as these US Thickston type covers. Have nothing to do with 'speed'
The ' Champion' covers are being made by O'brian truckers.

I must admit, I've always hated the "valve covers" . . . never made any sense to me to cover up the heads and in a goofy way make the engine look like something else. I kind of put them in the same category as "fake blower injector scoops" that guys had sticking out of their muscle car hoods to look like a Hilborn or Enderle fuel injector. Whew - glad I got that off my chest!

Have to agree. They only make any useful sense when they are used on a marine engine where they serve a purpose.
Otherwise it's just an aesthetic issue.
