The rear bumper on my 53 Merc parts car looked straighter than the one on my 52 so I did the switch. I filled the hole in the centre, where the hitch was bolted on, with a bumper bolt from a 38 Ford parts car. Not perfect but I'm satisfied with it.

Good job Ralph. Looks good. I just noticed it says "Automatic" on the trunk lid. I always thought they put "Mercomatic" on the Mercs ? Guess not all years.

You are right that most of the 52s seem to have Mercomatic either on the trunk lid or just below it. Mine is about the second one I have seen with "automatic" on the lid. Unique?

No, most other cars with Mercomatic have it below the trunk lid. Like the black Mercury in the picture above. It would be interesting to know just how many Mercs were sold with the "Automatic" script on the trunk lid.

Its a Meteor but you can see the "Mercomatic" script below the trunk lid on this Sask. car.

Don't think that all '51-'53 Merc's with the automatics had the Merc-O-matic emblem/s installed.
My '51 would have had one on each side of the rear quarter, but it did not. Think it was the model and the level that the cars were equipped that determined if any were installed. As to the 'Automatic' emblem, I suspect these were aftermarket emblems installed by dealers or owners as an after thought. Doubt that the factory would have installed the emblem as high as it is located on your trunk. And in the second example the emblem is below the trunk. I have seen at least two '52's that did not have the emblem installed and a few '51's including mine that did not have them.

Yes, I have seen more emblems below than above. This 53 Monarch (from Sask.) even had the overdrive emblem installed just below the trunk lid.
