i have a 1951 mercury that i want to remove the steering box . i know the manual says to remove it from inside the car. but my car has an under dash air cond & i don,t want to move it . now my question is has any one on the barn removed it from under the car.i can remove the steering wheel & the collum from inside the car. i think it will clear but it would be nice to know from some one who has did it. thank you

You mean that your AC is mounted under the column? The column will drop down away from the dash mount.

The steering box and shaft is best removed up, forward, and into the ENGINE AREA. With shift tubes removed, remove shift box mounting bolts and pitman attachment (not the pitman yet). If necessary remove the battery box If your a/c ductwork is tight against the U-bolt under the dash, all bets are off against need to remove it.
