Yes, it has been done with the necessary clearance under the car (on a lift etc.)
You mean that your AC is mounted under the column?
The column will drop down away from the dash mount.

While I don't have a/c ducting in my 1950 Merc, I have done the deed removing the steering box and am in the process of replacing things back together. The answer to your question rides on the ability of your steering shaft to drop down several inches from the dash. A photo of your situation would have helped. I assume the column will drop down since you have removed the shift tube.

The steering box and shaft is best removed up, forward, and into the ENGINE AREA. With shift tubes removed, remove shift box mounting bolts and pitman attachment (not the pitman yet). If necessary remove the battery box

If your a/c ductwork is tight against the U-bolt under the dash, all bets are off against need to remove it.

  • I haven't reported on my repair yet but my steering box worm gear was trashed with the entire job costing $1k+ including $200 shipping to-from Lares Corp.
  • While shift tube is out, examine the turn signal wires for possible need of replacement. I'll make you a great deal on new wires I just bought from Mac's. I used aircraft wires to replace mine as the Mac's are for a 12v system and I am 6v.
