Default New to the barn - Quick hello and battery in backwards question for my 38

Hello all,

Mike for Phoenix here, learning as much as I can about my 38' Deluxe. Love the car runs good most of the time, (think it is running rich) but it's a great car and story. Original Franklin / Bedford county Virginia car its whole life, barn find in all original condition, Except for the moonshine jugs found in the trunk.

Just wanted to introduce myself and thank yall for the posts. I read so much here I decided to join. By chance maybe I'll be able to share.

My questions is my battery is in the car negative to ground which is backwards. I have the original owners manual and service manual which agrees it should be positive to ground. The car runs fine, the lights work,
(although I've now been through both headlights and only have one high beam working) gauges appear to work but the alt reads slightly below 0 when running or dead center of the gauge. How can I tell if the battery is in wrong or the car has been modified to do it this way? Its all original as far as I can tell with nothing aftermarket. I have an original radio not installed and am concerned it will get fried if I do install it with the system this way.

Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers, Mike
