Default Not A, But Atleast Has an Old Car

I found this picture in a piano bench at a local auction several years ago. Finnally bought a scanner, so I can share this picture. It appears to be a C-47 that crashed during WWII. At a guesse I would say it is likely in this area, but have not showed it to any of the older generation to see if they remember it. Rod

After seeing this on the computer screen blown up abit more it looks more like a smaller plane than it does a cargo plane. At any rate I thought it was a neat picture. The car could be a 36 Ford, but hard to tell for sure. Rod

The rudder does not look like a C-47 to me. JMHO

I have to agree after seeing it blown up more. With the pic in its original size it looked that way. I will do some comparing this next weekend as I am abit curious. I had always written it off as a C-47, but now am sure it is not just by scale alone. Rod

Also, the straight edge on the rudder is on the trailing edge on
a C-47, not the leading edge. JMHO.

Post your picture on the AACA sight under "What is it". You might get a response from the guy in the picture

I stopped the picture by an older freind of the family locally while out and about this am. This accident happenned in 1941 or 1942 about 10 miles West of town. There was a baby killed in the accident, which likely means this was a civilian aircraft. I also got a positive ID on the boy standing in front of the fat man. I may get some more info with a search of the local papers archives when I have time. Rod

The vertical portion of the tail that you see is actually the right elevator and stabilizer and is "wire" braced. The airplane is a much smaller airplane than the C-47. It appears that the fuselage is all metal which eliminates many makes and models. That is as close as I can get without a wild guess such as a Ryan trainer. Gar Williams

Gar,

You're right on, but fuselage looks to flat for a Ryan. The stab/elevator look
kind-a-pointy also. How about a Gee Bee , 2 holer, Super Sportster?

Dudley:

Shape of the tail isn't correct for a G-B, plus they had fabric covered fuselages. This one appears to be metal or plywood. A good clue is the fairing for the stabilizer. I've sent the picture to a few of my friends to see what they can come up with. Gar Williams

Thanks Gar. I am going to spend some time at the archives at the local paper. Not sure if I will get there til Monday though. Possibly the type of aircraft will be mentioned. Since it is a weekly paper there will roughly be about 100 fish to look at, so I am allowing myself about 3 hrs. Rod
