Default Running boards

What do you guys use to make your running board mats black? I have a '30 town sedan with the diamond pattern on the running boards and I want them to be black instead of the ugly gray color. I can't use tire black products as they will made the boards slippery. I remember when we were kids, a hundred years ago, they used to mix black paint and gasoline to paint on tires. There must be a better solution than that. What are some suggestions? Is there a black, non-skid product out there?

I have used a tire cleaner, see the attached photo.

The one on the left is older, the one on the right I purchased in the last month. They do wonders with black rubber and whitewalls!!!

I have been very happy with Black Tire Paint. It's mixed 50:50 with water so a quart will be a lifetime supply.

Thanks guys.
Good answers. I have Bleche-White but I never thought about using it on black rubber, only white walls. I like the idea of black liquid shoe polish, but wonder how long it will last. The paint and water mixture sounds like what we used to do, but we mixed black paint and gasoline. DUH!! That was before latex paint. Try to find oil based paint now a days. Dollar Bill, I'm going to try your method.

Before you use harsh chemicals, try just scrubbing them with warm water, detergent and a brush. Then when dry, spray with Tire foam. Don't use the brands that say "the wet look". This leaves a nice satin black finish.
