Default steering box gear lube in the '40

Although this has been batted around already here on Fordbarn, you maybe interested in my experience with gear lubes. Since I just rebuilt the steering box, I wasn't about to start out with grease. Thanks to the Fordbarn, Lubriplate was suggested. I got Lubriplate's SPO 299 gear lube, which is rated as 250 SAE, but is actually heavier than the SAE 250 GL on ISO viscosity index.
It has none of the old EP additives of sulfur, lead, phosphorous or chlorine which can react with certain metals. The modern EP additives in SPO-299 do not stink like old gear lubes. So far, so good. Steers very easy, no leaks. $20. a quart direct from lubriplate, plus about $5. shipping.
