Why would you ruin a classic?

A guy in my club put a Toyota 4 banger in his tudor. He's really an ok guy though and stays in the middle of the group on our tours. STOCK MODEL As AND BLUE RIBBON CARS FOREVER.

There's a fellow running around here with a '28-'29 Sport Coupe with the iron duke four, not sure on the tranny - I believe it's a floor-shift manual - I think it's a stock Ford rear (higher r&p?), but I think he converted it to hydraulic brakes. Don't remember the stock firewall being disturbed.

If you substitute a modern tranny, this can cause major issues with the rear radius rods and mechanical brake linkages, as these either attach to or are built around the stock driveline.

There is a company that makes a kit to install a modern T-5 five-speed behind the A engine, and keep the mechanical brakes... not sure who though. Saw one this summer and it was a very neat set-up.

It's kind of a slippery-slope though - modify one element, and that necessitates five other mods...

The Hot Rod forum is a better place for your question.

Steve, 4 cylinder that came in 80's jeeps, mail trucks, pontiac fiero and others. Similiar to the chevy nova motor of the early sixtys that they now use in mercruiser boats. Both are good little motors.

Thanks, never heard the term before. It puzzles me to think someone with a stock a with a good motor, would remove it to put in a later 4 cylinder, why not just buy a shay? As a purist I find it offensive! JMHO

I agree. If it is mostly complete and stock and running, just leave it. I could possibly see his side if it was just a body and frame and missing most stock parts and a project.

Although I side with you guys on an emotional level ("Why ruin a good car?"); The fact is, the car belongs to him, and he is free to do with it as he wishes.

What we all need is for someone to come here and post pictures of a Model A hot rod that was converted back to stock. That would make us all feel better! For some reason, it's always the other way around...

If it makes you guys feel any better, my 31 Tudor was saved from becoming a hot rod. Seller sold it to us rather than the rodder even though he inquired first, simply because we promised to finish restoring it to stock condition.

I will add, that although I consider myself a purist I can appreciate the the right mods of others A's, even to the extent of a nice street rod. The sedan listed For sale 60s throw back, is really sweet. I could probably buy one already done, long ago, but could never convert one myself....

Not really emotion involved in my thought process, more of it just doesn't make sence.
