Default Tranny fluid level

How full do you fill the transmission on a 35 sedan? If I fill it to the level of the fill plug I loose a lot on the garage floor. Is it ok to fill so I can just touch the purple stuff when I put my pinkie in the plug hole?

I usually put a 90 degree bend in a piece of wire with about 1/2" turned down. I stick the 1/2" piece down at the bottom of the plug hole. If I touch grease I think I'm OK.
