Default 56 Ford With 312 Transmission Questionss/Options

I have a 56 Wagon with no driveline. I am buying a good running 312 with automatic out of a rusted out 4 Dr sedan set up with an automatic. The transmission hump in the Wagon had been cut out by prior owner probably for a floor shifter/manual set up or possibly different automatic. My question is-What other Fomoco Tranny set ups will fit behind the 312 without reinventing the wheel. I figure anything over the original 2 speed automatic would probably be an improvement. Both cars were automatics so I have no clutch pedal mechanism/pedals linkage at this point. Thanks in advance

Be aware that virtually all Y-block engines for sale are 312's, it's a miracle of sales technology.
Most of them are actually 292's (or smaller) until proven otherwise. It may not matter to you unless you're paying extra for something you're not getting. Look on the rear of the crankshaft for an aspirin sized dot, the dot means it's a 312.

Exactly how much "reinventing the wheel" are you talking about?
I'm not aware of other automatics that are a bolt-in. A bellhousing adapter of some sort would be needed, or some machine work at the least. Maybe something from the early 60's. There are others here who have better info about that.

The automatic that was on it is obviously the easiest match. If it's an oem Fordomatic they are actually 3spd, they just don't use 1st unless you stomp on it off the line.
Note that there are air-cooled and fluid cooled versions, the fluid cooled being the 'new & improved' ones.

The later Ford AOD transmission is a popular swap but I know nothing about what it takes to install them.

If the trans hump in the sedan is any good it might substitute for the one you're missing.

Flat-O-Matic makes a C-4 conversion kit if your not interested inan O/D. I put one in my 56 Bird. Basically a bolt in, but there are a few mods that must be done. Nothing major. Any other trans than the Fordomatic will probably require a new driveshaft

In my conversion, I used the stock throttle linkage and kick-down. The kick down had to be modified a little. You have to find a vacuum source for the C-4 as the Fordo didn't use vacuum.

I have a C-4 behind the Y-Block in my '30 coupe. there is a kit made by flat-o-matic to make the swap. I do not know of one for the AOD Trans, but there probably is one made. may be some one else hear knows. as far as the trans " tunnel hump" that has been cut out, see if you can cut that piece out of the car you got the eng. from, and weld it in your car. the floor pans should be pretty close between a sedan and a wagon

www.transmission center.net has the y-block to AOD complete kit you can use a 1982-86 Crown Vic drive shaft with a NEAPCO 2-0291 conversion U-joint to bolt up to the stock Ford rear end. You do need a Lokar AOD kit for the T.V. cable. Your existing Ford-O-Matic column will work with the AOD with a minor tweak. No issues with the AOD clearing the tunnel a lot of guys have done it ,I have a 5.0 and AOD in my '54.

Just another consideration, check the power to weight ratio.....my 302 may be 150 lbs lighter than a 312.....Y block.

I am changing the I6/auto to a 272/auto in my 56 F350 Boyertown bodied truck. I am interested in the transmission if you don't use it. I don't know if I need to just change the bell housing or need a completely different transmission for the 272. I am trying to period correct.

You only need bellhousing and converter, front inspection plate and the larger sheetmetal intake air duct from the 272. You could keep your original Fordomatic transmission and rear extension housing. In fact you might kick yourself if you used the 272 transmission as it is likely to have different speedo drive worm gear on the rear output shaft. Oh it would work with your speedo driven gear, but it would read incorrectly at the speedometer.
