My Father-in-law, turns 89 this summer. He ran a scrap metal yard for 35 years before retiring. He used to sledge hammer the cars down to make them more compact for recycling. This included drivable Model A's and T's. He wishes he had kept a few. Jeff

I try to in someway or another everyday, it helps make each today now a bit more tolerable.

All of our cars were just another old car at some time. It was only when the vast majority were destroyed and few remained that their value started to rise again. If a car survives the dangerous period, it will likely find a good home and have a future.
Then there are countries where the government has decided cars over a certain age should be recycled for whatever reason. (I suspect that picture by the OP was taken in England during their "cleanout".) That only reduces the chances of any particular car surviving the massacre. I wonder if those greenies who advocate the removal of older cars from the road because they are dirty have done any analysis of how much pollution is created during the manufacture of a new car from mining the ore, oil and production through to drive it out of the showroom. I suspect the making of a new car creates more pollution than any extra the older car might make over what the new one does anyway.

Yeah, I think those are British cars, the one up in the air looks like a Model Y Ford.

yea last i read a new prius does more damage to the world by the time its done than a 10 year old land rover still driving around.

Yea these cars would be equivelent to the mid 90's or older stuff now. how many 1994 F150's are in the scrap yards? Ford Tempos, Taurus, Thunderbird, etc. Fox body mustangs are creeping up in price. I own a Chevette - hardly ever see another one yet everyone either had one or more at one point.

Yes for sure its a UK wrecking yard, known as a Breakers or Knackers yard, I often went to them looking for parts in the 60s.
At that time cars were required to have a mandatory safety test when 10 years old, however it was soon changed to 7 years due to the high failure rate, mostly from structural problems, this pile you see is probably the result, and would have been around before WW2.
The car on the hook looks to be an Austin seven judging by the tiny brake drums, a better stopping distance could be had using the emergency brake, and would make a model A feel like it had anti lock brakes.

"Anybody remember the "patriotic" scrap metal drives during WWII?? Lucky any of the "old tin" escaped." With the last car produced to be sold to the public in Feb 1942, and no production of civilian cars for about 4 years, a '29-31 Model A was a treasure.. and not that old. I remember back in the late 50s they were selling for $15-25 in running condition. One of the kids in my neighborhood bought one for $5.00 running but in rough shape and proceeded to take it completely apart to see how it worked, never got it back together again. Oh to go back to those days with some extra money in my pocket.....

VERY little did survive in Europe. Now they come out here wanting "their" cars back. I like to point out that the reason they don't still have their own is because they melted them down to shoot at each other. "If you were civilised, that wouldn't have happened!" Then I watch the look on their faces. Fun!

But the Austins do have anti-lock brakes....

At least we will be the last generation to cry....

There is not one car made since about 1972 that is worth saving .

As well as not wanting to save them, they will be unsavable, because of the plastic and the electronics.

and the the majority of younger people who might be interested in them wouldn't know how to restore a car anyway.

I wonder if in another 40-50 years when our great grandchildren are getting into the car scene, or what ever futuristic equivalent will be, if they will be saddened by the pics of Dodge Caravans, and Ford Escorts being sent off to the crusher?

I think I remember a campaign during the Carter admin. where they wanted to cleanup federal lands, ie. desert and mountains, using helicopters and grab hooks.
