On a '35, do you have to change to newer backing plates plates that'd accept /have the juice brake cylinder or are there conversion juice brake cylinders made to convert original backing plates? Are there kits available for which ever way works?

you do need to change the backing plates (not face plates) to mount later ford juice brakes. this is the great thing about fords, buying the correct OEM parts will bolt together, except for the master cylinder. there are many ways to mount a master cylinder.
on a 35 I believe the easiest way to go is to change the front spindles to 37-48 ford units. I've seen guys modify earlier spindles for juice brakes but it was more involved. rears the backing plates are a direct swap and I'm pretty sure even your drums will work. will you be using the stock wires or other rims?? this is the big difference in the brake drums as there is a support on the 35 drums for wires that is a problem for other solid wheels. luckily you can just swap out to the later drums as well if this is a problem. |

Question on rears, u indicate direct swap? Assuming u mean swap to '37 - '48 backing plates on rear too?
Revkev6, planning on using stock wires, & know the support spacers to use with wires later yr. drums or disc.

you can bolt the 39-48 backing plates directly to your 35 rear. if your stock drums (12" is the stock id) are good then re-use them. for the fronts I'm not sure about the 35 drums and hydraulics but the spacers work fine with later drums. someone else may be able to comment.

I believe the 35 drums are highly sought after in the hot rod world. Might want to hold on to them - aren't they a 1 year only also?

early v8 as stated above has the hookup for the master cylinder mounts for your car. I'm sure they will also give you plenty of information on the rest of the conversion if you have more questions.

Thx guys, sent email to Early V8 to get info. Thx Tom T, I do realize the ''35 drums are rare and sought after. As with all the original parts to my '35 I've kept all . When I'm gone my kids or whoever they sell to will have all parts to. Bring back to completely stock if the choose. I'll leave a white paper on what's what and what's valuable,

Tom, while I do realize the value of the '35 rims as they can be used on many set-ups with the support spacers why the drums? Is it just the rarity. If you can't use them with the juice brakes as revkev6 indicates what kind of setups do they use them in?

Early V8 Garage actually has a number of solutions for you, depending on which pedals you're running (35 or 39) and whether your car is stock height or lowered. Richard and Dennis are a real asset to the hobby.

I have seen stock backing plates modified to hydraulic. The wheel cylinders were mounted at the bottom and the stock adjusters were used. They were self intergising and used wheel cylinders without the step.

Also to all reading the thread, after posting and reading some replies I went to get my new radials installed and and the thread had me thinking about the drums so while the rims were off I checked out the brakes and I think I am very lucky. I only have about 2 K miles in my '35 since getting on the road about 3 years ago but the car sat in a heated garage after owners husband passed away for thirty years with the people who had before me. Since starting this thread I think I'm realizing my drums are new old stock. it Looks like before he died he'd done a lot of work to it and after looking at the drums today I think they might have been OEM old stock replacements from 33 years plus ago. When I was going over the car getting it ready for the road, it really didn't occur to me as I pretty much knew nothing about early fords or the rarity of the drums ( was a mid '60's muscle car guy ) but the drums looked new.
