What am I missing here, other than the bolts and washers to hold on the spring. It appears a significant portion of the shaft is missing. Is this available or do I need to get a new bendix assembly?

Your bendix assembly looks grungy and is likely to be weak. Buy a new one for about $25. The shaft the bendix mounts on is the starter armature, and if the shaft is broken off you then need a new armature. If the shaft is intact check to make sure it is not bent as it must be straight for the bendix to engage the flywheel ring gear properly.

The drive head and sleeve are missing. Also need the half moon drive key.
I don't know where you can find them as separate parts, unless Bert's has them. 800-321-1931

Thank you. The pictures aren't all that good, the pieces I have are actually pretty sound. I need to go check another box and see if I can find the missing bits. I found pictures in the catalogs that show what I'm missing.

What ever you buy, get a spare spring and bolts for it. Throw them in the car where they are always available when you need them. If the starter ever starts whirring and not turning the engine, take the starter out and and you'll see immediately what the problem is.

Get a modern Bendix and be done with the problem forever. No more broken springs or bolts to fish out of the fly wheel housing. Just my humble opinion

Suggest you also get some of the special lock washers for the starter drive bolts.
