Default Turn signals

I have been told that the original tail lights can be used for the rear turn signals. Yes there is a right light assembly. If the tail lights are wired in parallel, which I think is original, how can they be used for the turn signals? Thanks

Rather than use the tail lights, use the brake lights. With a 7 wire Signal Stat controller, you can run turn signals through the brake light circuit such that for example if you are braking and indicating rt turn, the left side brake light stays on full and the right side brake light flashes. This is completely independent of the tail light circuit which operate as original

This is how my SignalStat 900 is wired.

Hope I have this right: You're correct in that the tail lights are wired in parallel. But so are the brake lights. One wire runs from the brake light switch back to the left rear light and loops over to the right rear light. You'd definitely want to use the brake lights, not the tail lights for your turn signal. And you'll need to run a separate wire from the turn signal switch back and across to the right rear brake light (you cut and splice onto the original brake light wire that connects between the two rear lights. That effectively splits the brake lights into independently-wired units for the turn signals.

So do I cut the right light wire and run the new wire to the light or splice the new wire into the existing wire that connects the two lights?

You need to separate the right and left brake bulb filaments, if you are going to use the same filament for flashers, so yes, you will need to cut the wire.
This is why I will make my turn signals a complete stand alone system.
It keeps it easier to install and easier to troubleshoot if need be.

The signal-Stat units are available all over the place and are a good unit, been around for decades.

A wiring diagram is enclosed with them. Just run a ground wire from the unit rather than rely on the steering column.

If you don't want to use the 7 wire switch for some reason, you can get an offset pin bulb holder and a 2 wire pigtail and press out the 1 wire bulb holder in the tail light and press in the 2 wire holder and run stop tail in the bottom and blinker in the top. You need to cut a bit off tube to go over the holder to support the light body while you press or tap it out. I got the bits from early Ford store, think they were for 40 or 48. I would probably have the part numbers somewhere if needed.

There is a separate bulb holder available from vendors , think is a 40- part number, take your stop light bulb holder out of t/light , fit the new TWO contact one with double contact bulb & hey presto have one filament for brake & other for blinker , works great , counting down to big 3
