I want an opinion. Sure I'll get many. Took main bearing cap off and found this. This isn't a cross country or daily driver car and runs fine. This is the front and is cast. I'm in a foreign country (Brazil) and getting a new one is a very major ordeal.
Should I... 1) leave the **loose** piece in and bolt it up and run it until it worsens. 2) REMOVE the piece and bolt it up and run it until it worsens. 3) stop the presses and re-do everything 'cuz she's guna blow! ** 4) Try to fill it with solder (white or yellow) so I don't loose the oil if it all breaks loose. ![]() Save

Given that the car is for occasional use, I would go with your option #1, making sure the clearance is correct. I see the right side of the cap in the picture had a shim...remove a lamination as required. Use any method you are comfortable with to make sure the oil clearance is about .0015". You will likely get years of service from the engine if you keep the speed down and the oil clearances proper. Leave the loose piec in place.

I don't know if you need more opinions or not, why did you take it apart? Nothing else to do, or was it making noise. but other than that I agree too.

That's why I don't take mine apart. Ignorance is bliss.

Should I leave the loose piece in there?
Just thought of this, what if I try to fill it with solder. The area is badly cracked and I'm afraid if it comes loose I'll lose lubrication. |

Do not leave the loose part in there it will not help and only move where it is not wanted
I would rebuild it or find a better cap |

Model A Fords are neither religion or life and death. People on forums need this reminder sometimes. Now, ignoring the brakes too long, perhaps, could be death defying.
