Default Wiper Mounting

I have never had a working wiper on our car. The motor is currently mounted to the windshield, and works when I apply vacuum via a hose. I'm a little confused about how the rubber hose is routed from the passenger side window pillar across the top, through the window and onto the motor.

Looking at the various holes in my windshield, it appears I have too many… Probably had other wipers mounted to it at one point or another, and someone drilled extra holes.

Questions:

1: am I correct, that there are too many holes in this windshield frame?

2: based on my Photos, and I planning on route in the hose properly?

3: does the hose just sit loose across the top of the windshield inside the frame?

Thanks!
