Default Fuel pump hitting intake manifold

I just put an Offenhauser quad intake on my 59A block. When trying to install the new Holley fuel pump I find it is squarely hitting the intake and there is no way it will go on. Has anybody else run into this? Is there a fix?

You can unbolt the cover and rotate the whole assembly.

In doing so make sure the diafram is not stuck to the top cover before trying to turn it.Top must be free to turn independent of the diafram. ken ct.

Also a good idea to have diaphragm pulled down before tightening the cover screws.

How is rotating the top of the pump going to help if it's the bottom of the pump that's hitting the intake? Or am I reading this wrong? ..B.

If nothing else works make a spacer to raise the pump and a longer push rod. G.M.

I think he means to rotate the tower. I'll have to look to be sure I will have firewall clearance.

Well Chris, wheres the problem the bottom, or the position of the inlet+outlet. I would get rid of that rubber top gasket under the cover, there N/G. Looks like it isn't even the correct size, shouldn't be hanging out like in pic.Use a good cork one. ken ct.

Is your manifold designed for the 49 - 53 engine or the earlier one? If later, you may have to use the later pump stand and pump.

I found the same problem with the Offy 4 bbl manifold. I made a 3/8 spacer to move the pump up. I lengthened the pushrod also. Works fine but the manifold is a pain in the ass. the generator is offset for some reason and the fan hit the hoses. I can't use the plug tubes because of the 8ba oil liller port. You can't use the 8ba stand due to the differences in the oil filler and road draft tube. It is a POS.

It is the later manifold. I'll try to scrounge a late tower and push rod. The fan on my '41 is mounted to the crank so I shouldn't have any problem with it.

If you get the later pump and tower then the later long push rod will not fit your early engine.

Why is that? I believe my engine is a '47.

8BA and later push rod is a bigger diam and at least 2" longer and wont fit down in the hole in the block and theres no umbrulla on it. You opened up a proverbial can of worms with a 8BA manifold, theres also the road draft problem.on a59AB engine. Good luck with all your problems. ken ct.

The manifold I bought was for a 59A. The draft tube hole was not machined out. It is not that hard to make a spacer. I did drill a hole in the draft tube boss and put a PVC valve in it. The best solution is to run an electric pump and just block off the opening and retain the breather/ oil filler.

Chris and Andy, I just encountered the same problem.
Trying to finish my 46 59ab engine (276 w/stock heads).
I got the offenhauser 4 bbl intake and it is for the 59ab not the 8ba.
I am using the stock pump tower and original fuel pump (rebuilt).
I got a pump rod for the aluminum intake.
No problem rotating the top of the pump assembly.
Looks like a spacer is in order.
I can't believe that offenhauser didn't include everything in a kit.

I have a 59 series engine with a 32-48 offy 4bbl manifold for my 40 coupe. These early manifolds mount the fuel pump like stock and as stated, you need a spacer. I machined an aluminum spacer using the stand gasket for a pattern. I put this spacer on first before the the tin tube that has the baffles and fuel pump stand. This is because the fuel pump stand has a recess for the baffle tube. I then made a steel extender that added exactly the thickness of the spacer to go on the top of the pushrod that fit tight over the end and for about 1/2 inch down the pushrod and put Loctite on it for good measure but it can't come off with the pump installed. I like using the spacer as it allows me to use all the stock parts, pump, stand, baffle tube, stock pushrod with umbrella with small extension. You don't need to move the pump up much to clear the manifold runner. I am running a 6v pos ground alternator which clears the Holley 4bbl. and mounts to the stock stud at the front of the manifold.
