Is there more then one version? Have 2 slightly different ones.
one on left. Just found in an old collection of caps, etc. This is what I will call the old one as it is in worse condition. Ears broke off. Appears to be legit in every way. Weighs 144.3 Grams One on right. Found in Dick Spadaro's shop. Appears to be slightly used or even NOS. I will call this the new one. Weighs 172.3 grams. Other differences: New one "nose" of ridge is sharper and has triangle shaped facet. older one: rim is thinner then new one. Also you can notice the triangle facet on the rim side of the "new " one. Nothing on the new one in magnetic. The "ears" and screw on the old one are magnetic. Last edited by OLDTINDEALER; 08-08-2016 at 10:33 PM. |

The "new" one, the one on the right, appears to be assembled wrong with respect to the red gasket....

The "new" one appears to be an old Rosemead reproduction given the thicker circumferential skirt with the brass innards taken from what at one time were readily available NOS '33 truck caps (the painted WWII service part version). That was a common practice forty plus years ago before Bob Drake reproduced the brass innards when the Rosemead reproduction was the only game in town. The heavier die casting of the reproduction plus the corrosion of the steel innards on the original account for the weight difference.
The original cap appears to be the early version with the tabs being the same size whereas the different size tabs on the reproduction is representative of the later production version when Ford altered the caps and the radiator neck openings to prevent the caps from being put on backwards (with the peak facing forward rather than rearward as intended). |
