I had posted this comment on my "garage damage" thread and thought I should start a new post. Here it is:
Just got home after 330 miles and a great ride. Storms moving in now so got home just in time. Noticed a slight hesitation coming home at low throttle on the flats (not many flat roads up there). Starts and idles great (idle jets) and pulls without a miss over the mountains (power valve). Accelerates strong. So I suspect a main jet has a speck of dirt in it. Will take the carb apart in the morning There is a filter at my electric pump and one inside the fuel pump bowl but before when this happened I found tiny blackish (less than 1/16") balls like "snot" in the bowl. Must have formed in the bowl? Maybe some rubber/gasket disintegration from the pump to the carb. Will let you know. Just a follow-up on my post:
Took the carb off and checked the main jets (.049). They seemed clear. no dirt in the bowl. Took it apart and blew out all the passages. Power valve test overnight and no leakage. Accelerator pump (leather) looked good. So put it all together and a test ride today. Ran great! So, what caused the hesitation? A mystery but now ready for a 2 day get away. A little surprised that there was no comment or help on my post. Maybe the next post I will ask what oil to use.LOL John Last edited by oldford2; 07-10-2016 at 05:42 PM. |

John, I misinterpreted your initial post as having a miss. Now that you say you have .049 jets, I reread your post, and will suggest that you change up to .051 jets, as I now feel that you meant that upon depressing the pedal, your engine starved momentarily before picking up. .049 jets are a bit too lean to run at sea level.

No hesitation on acceleration. Just on flats at low load and 40 to 50 mph. We are at 1000 above sea level and cruise in the northeast up to 2000 ft and then down to sea level (Maine and Cape Cod). Last trip was 19 mpg. I will get some .051 jets and try them out of curiosity this summer. Always enjoy a new project. Thanks for your comment John |
