I just installed a rebuilt 1936 21stud flathead in my 32 pickup. I have 2 starters and while they both spin freely on the shop floor, when bolted up tp the block they both lock up. One was a supposed to be rebuilt unit that came with the rebuilt engine I installed and the other I took off another engine I had. If I finger tighten 2 nuts on the end of the long mounting bolts they both spin over fine with a battery on the shop floor. If I tighten them they lock up the armature. What am I missing here that is causing this?

How about the end of the starter hitting the tin can on the back of the pan. Just a guess. Walt

Just another guess here: Make sure both the front and rear end plates are mounted flat to the center section. They both have locating tabs and recess in the center main body section, they have to align so the end plates mount flush.

Thanks guys, Terry was right. The case rotated about an 1/8" . Got it back together and cranks fine now.

Be sure you reinstall the starter to oil pan bracket ( P/N 51A-11150 ,'39-'53. This helpe to keep the starter "square on" to the pan mounting area. Vendors have them- Larry

part # is '39-'53, just modify the clip to fit the pan rail. |
