I have gotten to the point where I am going to paint the "A" pillar, gas tank, cowl, etc. To do this properly I need to remove the windshield. It is held on by 6 screws through the windshield hinge. Easy right? NO! They are VERY tight, and don't come out even after they have broken free. So we are not talking about wood screws here. I am thinking there must be nuts or captured "D" nuts involved. How does the windshield hinge attach to a 29 tudor?
I think I may have to remove the rear view mirror and upholstery panel over the windshield to gain access to the back of those screws? Yes? No? What ever happens, my over arching rule of everything has proven true again: IT IS NEVER EASY!!! But then if it were easy, anyone could do it. ![]() |

Thanks Mitch. The panel is coming off so I can get Kroil on those nuts. But that is tomorrow. Right now it is 75 and sunny, so I am going Kayaking!

Yea my 28/29 CC truck cab has slotted machine screws and square nuts... I've sprayed soaked heated cooled sprayed soaked some more and 4 of them you cant get to easily. If they were new you could get a wrench on them and tighten the machine screw but as it looks now I'm going to have to carefully grind and chisel off... Definitely putting normal hex nuts on so in the future it will be possible to slip a socket over to loosten up...

OK I got the panel above the windshield off. As expected it was just held on by brads nailed into the wood part of the header. Sure enough there were the nuts that held the windshield hinge screws. They are now soaking in Kroil. One more obstacle to overcome. I'll let them soak over night and get them out tomorrow.
Right now? The sun has come out and it is time to get my 10K done in the Kayak! ![]() |

I got all the screws out or loose. I'll take the windshield off tomorrow when I'll have help to hold it. It was NOT easy. Here is what worked. (It might help others with the same problem.) Using my multi purpose oscillating tool I cut the screwdriver slots deeper. This gave the screwdriver a better bite, and vibrated the h*ll out of the screws letting the Kroil in to do its magic.

Sounds like a good approach.....especially for screws that have likely been sitting there for 80+ years! Like your kayak photo too!!

Sure glad Ol Walter is a 31. I didn't have any problem at all getting my windshield out. Love those wood screws.

On slant windshield cars, the windshield can be slid sideways out of its hinge, leaving the upper hinge attached to the header. Doing so greatly improves access to the upper hinge attachment screws.
It may be necessary to squirt some WD-40 into the hinge and work the windshield open & closed a few times to get it loose. Although the hinge design is the same on straight windshield cars and trucks, the visor prevents sliding the windshield out of its hinge.
