Default Rear end

Going to need a new rear end. Should I look for a complete used one, rebuild the old one, change gear ratios, look for someone to do it for me, leave it alone until it blows up? I am really not looking forward to this problem.

Curious to know what are your symptoms? Rebuild it with a different ratio would be my plan....putting in a used diff is a crap shoot at most with a lot of labor involved JMO..

If you are mechanically inclined I don't see why you can't do it yourself, changing the ratio is not that big of deal.
If you have the tools/desire/time...go for it.
If you want it fast, and have the cash, let a good, quality, and trusted shop do it for you.

Why do you want to change ratios? Just remember if you lower the ratio to much and you have a heavy car that will affect the performance of the car. But if it were me, I would rebuild before it blows on you.

I used Tom Indy's article when I rebuilt my rear end in my 29 special coupe. I made the special tools he described and every thing worked great. Some one installed a 4-11 rear in my coupe in the past and I changed it to a 3-54 and I am very pleased with it. Dwayne

That is a great tutorial. The only reason to change the ratio is because this will be a touring car. Now to find some help. Thanks

A rear end build isn't too difficult. Make sure everything is good a clean. New pieces like gears and bearings etc. always a good idea.

What do you actually need? Do you need someone to do the machine work and then you reassemble, -or do you need it assembled too?? Come over to Elizabethton one day (about 45 miles to your east) and I will walk you thru what you need to do, then you can decide what is next for you.

I took mine apart, cleaned everything nice, then was immediately put on 60hr work weeks. After a few weeks of getting nothing done, I took it to a differential shop and had it all reassembled for $400. Totally worth it.

I installed 3.54 gears and I couldn't be happier. Lots of the boulevards here in town have 45-50mph speed limits and the car effortlessly stays with traffic.

You are lucky to have Brent close to give good on hand advice. Rear axles are one of my specialties and can the common guy do it with a certain amount of common sense, the right tools, and reading up... some can... some can't! Depending on your own skill set, tools, etc you can make the decision to recruit help or do it yourself.

There's definitely a skill set, tool, and knowledge to doing them right.

Once again Brent proves what a kind and generous person he is! We are indeed fortunate to still have him on the Barn! Wayne

Great plan. I've been meaning to come over for a visit anyway. Hopefully I can drive the car over just waiting for the carb now. Thanks
