Smile State inspection

Im in New Jersey and not wanting to be bond by the restrictions of antique plates I registered my truck with regular plates. This meant having the truck state inspected every year including emissions. I just got a notice from the state that I no longer need to have it inspected.

Figured that most states at the least "grandfathered" older vehicles manufactured in days before pollution control devices as exempt from regulation and emission inspections.

Here in Pennsylvania under a Hapsburg Empire style government autocracy, automobile emission control state inspection is under edicts set up by each separate county bureaucracy. Within the bloated mini-oligarchy here in Monroe County, there is a motor vehicle safety inspection but no emissions testing or certification. Antique automobiles registered and titled in Pennsylvania are exempted from any state inspection.

NJ is cutting out more and more of the inspection process- if your car was registered as an antique (25 years old or more) there never was an inspection-only on 20 year old classics was an inspection required. Now as Aok says, any pre 95 car requires no inspection in NJ. Motorcycles are also now exempt as well as many diesel trucks in the smaller capacity. NJ is always broke, like most states and so they dont want to pay Parsons of Cali the $ to inspect.
Also a new rule, if your newer vehicle does not pass the state inspection, you MUST go to a private place for the re inspection on any car newer then 95.
should help drive up the sales of old cars in NJ. Some bean counter decided that there are so few 95 and older cars on the road, to just skip the process of inspection for them. Probably under 1% or so..............

regarding being "bound" by antique plates........ when has any antique car insurance co ever checked your odometer and the amount of miles you drive? Just a question..................

In New Jersey the MV Department did away with any safety inspections on vehicles.

You can drive a car through the inspection station inspection with broken and defective lights, horn, windows, brakes, body rot, bald tires, etc. and get a two year "pass" sticker.

The only thing they care about is the car's tailpipe emissions, leaking oil or fluids, or a defective gas cap.

Registered as "antique" vehicles (25 tears or older) are exempt from any form of inspection.

So, make sure you have plenty of insurance if you drive through New Jersey.

Thankyou for the clarification

I think any vehicle less than five years old also ought to be exempt. New cars are so environmentally engineered they almost never (maybe fully never) fail. Even my 92 Honda and 93 Miata passed when they were 18 years old, with no special preparations or pre-inspection repairs. But inspections are a big revenue generator in the counties that require them, sooo...

I'm trying to get a handle on this. I have not received anything from the state for my 1991 Ford Bronco with regular plates and insurance, but then again I'm not due for inspection either. Does this mean I will no longer have to take it to inspection?

Here is a link to the NJ MVc that explains it

Sorry, but they stopped doing gas caps a while ago. Like 3-4 years ago I think.

But do not worry.

The state has mobile inspection stations.
They flag cars passing by and hand out fines if your car fails.

In Massachusetts everything has to go through at least safety inspection every year. I had a 1963 King Midget that I had to get a sticker for and the inspectors laughed but they didn't hesitate taking the 35 dollar fee.

Best thing to do is vacate NJ and come to NC, In Craven country max value on most antique autos is $500. amounts to nothing at all. if you get the horseless carriage or antique plates with no inspections or stick it up your tail pipe inspections been there done that

No state inspection, IM test, or whatever here in Alaska. However, if you don't have Antique Auto tags, the bi-annual fee is the same for the Model A as it is for my wife's Lincoln, about $200

Rich,
In NJ's defense, once you buy antique plates, they are good for life. Also, regarding tax, we can write "gift" and there is no sales tax, so some states may have it better, but not many. Regarding a title transfer, we are 60. wherein most states are around 25.
If I am not mistaken, it is 3 or 4 dollars in NM!

Try the one in Mays Landing.

They are an interesting crew.

The lady who was doing the inspeciton on my van was first thinking my plate was not valid. I have a first aider tag she had never seen before. The fact the paperwork shows the plate number did not cross her mind. Then she gave up on that and managed to mess up the computer system. Took like 10 minutes to reboot everything.

I bit my tongue and waited patiently. They did a quick idle test for emissions and passed it. I was amazed.
